Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by David Daniel Palmer. D.D. Palmer described the body as a “machine” whose parts could be manipulated to produce a drugless cure. In the early growth stage, he asked a patient and friend to help him name his discovery. Reverend Samuel Weed suggested combining the words cheiros and praktikos (meaning “done by hand”) to describe Palmer’s treatment method, creating the term, “chiropractic.”
Chiropractic care works to relieve the body of “subluxation” present as a result of stress, strains or incidents. Subluxation (a.k.a. Vertebral Subluxation) is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. A chiropractic adjustment works to remove the body stress and relieve the patient of unwanted pain and suffering.
Chiropractic takes the shape of many techniques developed over the years including but not limited to Activator Method, Applied Kinesiology, Diversified, SOT (Sacral Occipital Technique), Thompson and Upper Cervical to name a few. A chiropractic treatment is painless and often the effect is felt by the patient immediately. Combining several factors including a consultation, comprehensive examination and x-rays if necessary, the doctor can make a qualified decision on an appropriate treatment or treatment plan.
Chiropractic has become the wellness practice of the future offering freedom from subluxation and a transition to a healthly lifestyle. To say chiropractors “only” treat neck and back pain is undervaluing the concept and history of Chiropractic. A doctor of chiropractic will work with you to encourage body harmony by considering the balance of proper life skills in the form of a healthy diet, exercise and rest.
